Doubt to Trust
Swami Nisargadatta
Maharaj, an Indian Guru of nondualism stated: "I can tell you about
myself. I was a simple man, but I
trusted my Guru. What he told me to do,
I did. He told me to concentrate on 'I
am' - I did.”
Man is eternally in
search of new things. A new place to
discover, a new subject to master, and a new hobby to cherish are but a few
examples. ‘A new’ has gained momentum in
today’s world given there are multiple options facilitated by a Google of
information.
Life in its
simplest form is an evolution from a domain of doubt to a field of faith, and finally
into a tower of trust. Human mind views
every single activity through these steps to help arrive at a final destination
of happiness.
In the beginning, fear
always overtakes the excitement to know the unknown. Doubt creeps into the mind – either it usurps
a plan or helps iron out all creases to master a plan. This depends upon the individual’s mental
strength. New exploration is a tentative
start with the mind clouded in doubt.
Activities progress
through logical steps. Faith is a factor
where the person in search of the unknown leans upon the experience of another
person, trusted or not. This is akin to
blind faith, for example, what is stated in Google by unknown other browsers is
accepted. Decisions are made; the
experience of activity later may bring smiles to some, and keep smiles away by
miles for others.
At the final
frontier, through one’s own experience one will obtain an insight into mastering
faculties. Trust takes precedence encapsulated
in certainty. Whatever doubt one has is mastered
with the help of intellect. Results are
evident.
In a spiritual
path too, a seeker goes through these experiences. From doubting God’s existence to developing
faith, to stating Aham Brahmasmi (I’m Brahman), the seeker attempts to bring
all activities into his own experience. One
trusts a Guru who is immersed in this path and understood the essence of
happiness. Guru is the only one who can be
Trusted to reach the ultimate goal.
Doubt to Faith to
Trust – Maharaj’s quote gave him enlightenment.
Can we follow too?!

DeleteThe article you have penned is spiritual quest from doubt to faith to trust and ultimately to reach happiness is true in the sense all long for it. We venture for new things from babyhood till old age.If we give a new doll to the infant, immediately it will put aside the old one seeking happiness in the latest.First time I hear about Swami Nisargadatta Maharaj's spiritual tenet to know ,' I am.' If we know who we are life becomes easier.Thank you Sir for your article which gave rejuvenation.
ReplyDeleteThank you so very much for your lovely and insightful comments. The doll example is true of all of us.....not just a child I feel but even adults will put aside a gadget for something new, may be another gadget!
DeleteThe purpose of our life should be find out who we are and where we came from.....the answer is beyond '...we came from our mother's womb...' and that's teh beauty of this spiritual quest.
Glad you liked this article...thank you again
